What
will happen to Europe in the forthcoming time? How will it impact
on the rural areas? What kind of threats as well as opportunities
for socio-cultural, economic and ecological values can we expect?
Can European rural areas and their communities maintain their
livelihood?
The ambition of the Eururalis project is twofold. First it
wants to support policy makers in discussions about the future
of rural areas in the EU27 with scientifically sound data.
Secondly it wants to learn about the interacting of many forces
that drive the future of rural Europe.
The output of Eururalis sketches what could happen to rural
Europe based on conditions that differ in nature, course,
duration or place. The integrated impact on People, Planet
and Profit indicators as well as on land-use is assessed for
four possible and plausible main scenarios.
There
are two versions of Eururalis. Version 1.0 was released in
2004 as a discussion support tool to give an impulse to the
discussion on rural development in EU 25 during the Dutch
chairmanship of the EU. Eururalis was used on many occasions
since by policymakers and scientists as well as in education. Version
2.0 is the follow up. In 2008 scientists from the current consortium
will elaborate the Eururalis framework towards Eururalis 3.0, with
even more international scientists than before.
Eururalis 2.0
is the most recent version of Eururalis. It offers more interactivity
and many new indicators. New is the implementation of strategic
policy options. Eururalis 2.0 assesses the integrated impact
of EU policy concerning CAP and biofuels. Offering all this,
Eururalis 2.0 is a powerful tool that links global driving forces
such as demography, technological development and macro economic
growth with the specific characteristics of rural regions for
all regions in the EU27.
